MILFORD (WWJ) - Michigan’s military families will be getting a major financial boost when the Michigan chapter of the National Defense Industrial Association holds its major fundraiser for USA Cares from noon to 6 p.m. at Kensington Metropark on Saturday.

The event mixes the serious and not-so-serious bikers and car buffs from around the state. It will include car show prizes, a bounce house for kids, BBQ, a silent auction and an open bar.

Music legend John Parr will give a free public concert at the event. Parr wrote and performed the hit, “St. Elmo’s Fire,” which became the signature song for athlete Rick Hanson when he wheel-chaired around the world in the 1990s to raise awareness of spinal cord injuries.

The annual “NDIA Charity Ride and Classic Car Show” has quickly become a major a major fundraiser for Michigan’s post-9/11 military and their families served by USA Cares – a national nonprofit that pays essential bills for the nation’s military and their families, especially when disability claims are backlogged or when they seek long-term, in-hospital treatment for post traumatic stress.

“This event draws thousands of people, of all interest and all with the common goal of raising funds to ensure that Michigan’s military families keep their homes and keep food on the table for their families,” Bob Belknap, vice president of USA Cares, said in a release.

To date, USA Cares has assisted Michigan’s military with $250,000 in grants. That assistance has helped to save 85 military-owned homes and has kept 700 Michigan children from becoming homeless.
